Description
Waiara is a vibrant fantasy world set in the 1920s Polynesian islands, focused on indigenous fighter pilots who navigate mysteries and seek treasure for their people. The world brims with magical characters and mythical locations, all inspired by the rich tapestry of Polynesian myths and values. Given the deep cultural roots of the story, I prioritized illustrating the world with a strong sense of respect and cultural awareness to ensure that each depiction carried the integrity of Pacifica traditions and mythology.

Research
To ensure the authenticity and cultural respect in my illustrations, I conducted extensive research. Though the island of Waiara is fictional, the world draws inspiration from a 1920s Polynesian context. I explored various resources, including books on Māori carvings, and delved into the differences between Māori and Pacifica myths. While my work wasn't intended to replicate traditional artwork, understanding the historical and spiritual contexts allowed me to capture the essence, or "mana," of these cultures in my designs.

Challenges and Solutions
CONSIDERING THE CULTURAL CONTEXT Challenge: Ensuring that the depictions of Polynesian myths and characters didn’t feel culturally appropriative. Solution: Conducted research into Polynesian and Māori mythology and incorporated traditional values into character and setting designs while maintaining creative authenticity. BALANCING FANTASY WITH AUTHENTICITY Challenge: Blending mythical fantasy with the historical and cultural accuracy of the 1920s Polynesian context. Solution: Carefully incorporated fantastical elements without straying from the core cultural narratives, using the research to guide how magic and mystery coexisted with the realities of the time. CREATING A UNIQUE VISUAL LANGUAGE Challenge: Illustrating a visually distinct world that reflects the spirit of Polynesian culture without directly copying traditional art styles. Solution: Developed an original art style that captures the cultural essence ("mana") while drawing on design elements inspired by Māori carvings and Pacifica symbolism.
